In Shinjuku - cheap things to do? (Oh, and dog cafes too)
Main Post:
My girlfriend and I are in Tokyo until the 3rd of January; right now we're in a McDonalds enjoying the free wifi since we don't check in to our hotel for several hours.
We went to a cat cafe in Sendai which was great -- does anyone know of a dog cafe around Shinjuku? And anything else to do over the next few days, really. We're not really nightlifey sorts, and nor do we have much money left, so something fun, cheap and quirky are preferred! My gf can speak Japanese, so we're not too restricted by the whole language barrier thing.

I think the dog cafes in Tokyo are just dog friendly places where people take their own dogs, not like cat cafes. There is a rabbit cafe in Harajuku though.
Have you been to Inokashira park? There are street performers on holidays, you can ride a boat on the lake, wander around the park and the small zoo (closed now but opens again on 2nd - there are two parts to it), and walk through the covered shopping arcade to the North of the station to find somewhere cheap to eat. It's in Kichijoji, a few stops West from Shinjuku on the Chuo line.
Where can I get dog for cheap?
Main Post:
Seems I can’t trust people anymore. Where can I get a dog? Craigslist people ask for $300 rehoming fees for their pit bull thats gonna get its ears clipped and abused anyway and most shelters ask for a fixed address which I don’t have either. Any one between Eugene, Or and the sf bay know where I can rescue a pup?
Edit: This sub has 1.1 million subs and I’m sure 90% of you are housed up so lemme make something clear. I own very few things but i can make money to put food in my mouth and food in another’s mouth. If I had a dog, that dog would be closer to me than most housed people. I’d never leave him at the house while I go party, or see a friend or work. People act like dogs on the street are living horrible lives and they aren’t. They live horrible lives when they are locked in decorative cages and end up with anxiety and obesity. Having 300+ to throw at the owner for no reason doesn’t make you a good candidate. Dog fighters have 300, they can make a lot of it back anyways. It rubs me the wrong way when a group for travelers is full of randos who know nothing about this life and are telling others how to live it. Go outside.
Top Comment: I really, really don't mean this in a harsh way, so please forgive me, but I have to ask - if you're uncomfortable with $300 to get a dog, what about when it gets sick or hurt and needs thousands in vet care?
Dogs shouldn't cost thousands of dollars
Main Post:
I dont care what it is; it's nothing but people trying to capitalize off others for a "purebred" dog. No dog should cost $2,000-$5,000 dollars. That's literally just extortion. Dogs literally breed for free; that's what nature does. We shouldn't have to pay $5,000 for a dog. And that's JUST for the dog. That's not including all the future vet visits, the food, the toys, all the accessories etc. I don't have an issue with getting any of that for my dog but a dog shouldn't cost multiple thousands of dollars. There's nothing that can justify that but greedy capitalism. Yeah these people need to make money for what they put into the dog but a lot of these people are making 10x the profit. I don't think we should be extorting something that nature does.. naturally. We force dogs to breed and then we sell their babies. In a way that's fucked up/savage/barbaric if you think about it but that's a conversation for another time. Imagine if another creature did that to humans... we wouldn't hear the end of it from people.
So no I don't support this capitalist market where dogs coat thousands and thousands of dollars, and that's just to buy them. That's not including the shots, check ups, etc either. Yeah some breeders take care of that for you but that isn't the point. I don't like dog breeders anyway, it's nothing but a capitalist game.
Top Comment: You can get a free dog if you want. Hell, you could get paid to foster one if you wanted
I want a puppy - how can i find one at reasonable price?
Main Post:
I live in southern california - and willing to travel.
I had my Wonderful Akita for 11 years until she died this year from cancer. I am good with dogs and mainly want another one because my daughter asked for one for christmas (snowball was her dog since my daughter was 3) - now that snowball died, daughters lonely.
If you know someone who has a puppy they are interested in selling or rehoming - let me know.
Or if you know some way to find a good puppy without playing over $500 please let me know.
**Every puppy I can find in southern california is OVER $500 or more in rehoming fee/price etc
Top Comment: You won’t find a reputably bred puppy at $500 so I would look in rescues and shelters. Hollywood Huskies, Maeday Rescue, and Mutt Scouts are in SoCal and all have litters of puppies right now.
Confused on Where to Get Puppies
Main Post:
I have never owned a dog and quite frankly I am very hesitant because of the training. The thought of cleaning up dog poo and urine is just not something I am looking forward to in the slightest.
However my wife and daughter really want a dog and I am trying to find one. My problem is I hear all sorts of do's and don'ts and I don't know what to believe.
There is a place called PetLand that all I hear from dog owners are horror stories and to stay tf away, don't buy there under any circumstances.
Then I hear everyone say adopt, but I ALSO hear that adoption can be a nightmare because you don't know what the dog has actually been through. I also hear getting a puppy is best because you can train them fully on your terms.
My confusion comes from people saying not to buy from puppy mills. Doesn't that keep the puppy in a worse situation? Wouldn't it be BETTER to get them out of a bad environment, even if the bad breeders make a few bucks?
I want a puppy I can rear from the start, but where the hell do you find reputable sellers or breeders? It also seems like the consensus from my experience is ANYONE "breeding" dogs is a total asshole?
I just need advice. I have no clue which is right. We've been to shelters and just didn't like any of the animals there, and some seemed like they had a lot of problems.
Where the hell can I get a puppy without feeling bad?
Top Comment: There are two responsible places to get a puppy/dog: reputable breeder (see subs wiki) or a reputable shelter/rescue group. Supporting other sources such as puppy mills enables them to keep producing more poorly bred and cared for dogs and so wont end the cycle.
How much did you pay for your dog/puppy? (Not including rescue/shelter pups )
Main Post:
Comment awaaaaay!
Curious what the average amount is that people pay for dogs.
(Note: Yes rescues are preferable if you’re able to do that, but there’s less of a huge price range for rescues to be curious about, which is why I say not including rescue/shelter)

Looking for Puppies in PA
Main Post:
Hi there,
I'm a new dog owner looking to find a reliable puppy website/store where I can buy or adopt a puppy for $500. A small puppy, under 1-year-old, does anyone know any reliable places that I can look for/find some?
I looked online but it's been a bit difficult and time-consuming. Some are puppy mills, others have good reviews but they are expensive, and the others aren't in the area.
Also, does anyone know if Puppies.com is reliable?
Is Lancesterpuppies good, or keystone puppies?
Are they puppy mill?
Top Comment: There are no ethical puppy stores. You are in heart of puppy mill country, so you need to be really careful about where you get a dog from. For a puppy costing under $500, your only option is a rescue, no reputable breeder is going to be selling dogs for under $1000 (on the very low end). Search your local humane society, county shelter, or local rescue groups. Additionally, puppies are expensive. Are you prepared to pay upwards of $2000 in the first year for regular vet checks, emergency vet checks, and supplies?

All I can say is don’t get anything remotely close to a Great Pyrenees (shedding, independent thinker so they don’t listen, barking, etc.). A lot of people adopt them without thinking and they end up in the pound. Honestly labs and goldens are always a good first dog

Mutts are generally cheaper than purebred dogs, are just as cute and tend to live longer than purebreds.
